Why Death Advocacy Matters

In a culture that often avoids death, speaking about it openly is an act of courage, clarity, and care.

Death advocacy is about creating space for conversations that society often avoids. In North American culture, death is frequently treated as a taboo — something frightening to ignore rather than a natural part of life. Advocates challenge this silence by helping individuals, families, and communities approach mortality with clarity, dignity, and compassion.

Through death advocacy, people can prepare emotionally and practically for the inevitable. This includes making informed decisions — something that can feel overwhelming at the end of life, when emotions run high and clarity can be hard to find. Part of my role is to help clients and families pause, reflect, and ask the questions that matter, ensuring their voices are heard and their wishes honored.

It’s not about morbidity; it’s about hope, presence, and fostering resilience. For those whose beliefs include the existence of life beyond death, advocacy also provides a safe, spiritual space to explore these truths, to honour the soul, and to approach dying with reverence and peace.
